Giving Write Permission to Direct Messages

Twitter has introduced a new permission level from June 30th, as per this change your Twitter applications will not be able to access direct messages unless the special permission is given to the app. There are currently three types of access permissions:

  • 1. Read, Write, & Direct Messages (New)
  • 2. Read & Write
  • 3. Read-only

    • Existing applications may show the following error message:

    403:The request is understood, but it has been refused.
An accompanying error message will explain why.

    How to fix this issue?

  • 1. Log in to your Twitter account from which you generated the API key
  • 2. Go to http://www.twitter.com/apps
  • 3. Click on 'Edit Details'
  • 4. Change the 'Default Access type' to 'Read, Write, & Direct Messages'
  • 5. Click on 'Save Application'

    • Now you will be able to send/view/delete DMs via TweetTwain.
